BREAKING - My episode of the Burnt Toast pod with Virginia Sole-Smith just dropped. We talk about the cancellation controversy that led Kids Eat In Color dietitian Jennifer Anderson to completely rewrite the restriction section of her new book, Feed Them Well. We both read the book for this episode and we have thoughts and feelings about her take on 'research' (lol), 'hyper-palatable foods', the weaponising of science to diminish lived experience, and why she felt like she needed to come up with a new, sanitised word for fatphobia. And ofc, we talk about wehther we agree with Anderson's interpretation of the literature on restriction. Check in out hereand then come join us in the Snackcord to discuss!
Ok onto today's post!
CIHAS Concierge is our new segment where we help each other crowd-source tried and trusted recommendations from within the CIHAS community. We kicked off over the summer with a swimwear concierge (and I've put all those recs here for you for anyone planning on some winter sun). Similarly I've started pulling this month's recs here. Like I said on Tuesday, we're going to experiment with affiliate links; I'm not suggesting you buy more crap you don't need, but if you have a real need and were going to buy the thing anyway, using our links doesn't cost you any extra and helps keep the newsletter, newslettering! I'd love it if you could chip in with your recommendations or requests if you're looking for something specific in the comments. While we would all ideally shop from ethical and sustainable brands with a good range of sizes (or best of all, buy second hand), this isn't always affordable or accessible. Please be gentle with each other and assume that we are all doing our best within our means and spoons!
This month's Concierge query comes from Sarah in the Snackcord. She writes:
'Any recommendations for good all-around leggings?? Would also love to find some nice comfy joggers or similar.
I’ve been wearing Bam leggings for years (even though they didn’t last as long as I’d like for a so called eco-friendly brand) because they fit well and I liked that I could wear them on their own just as leggings or under a dress. But it seems they’ve changed them and the new reviews are not good.
Just got some from Rapanui but they’re a bit too slippery for my liking.'
I thought this was an excellent question; Good Leggings are really hard to find. They have to meet a certain minimum criteria: not need to be pulled up every 3 minutes, not turn translucent when you bend over, not go all bobbly and weird after a single wash, and, to Sarah's point, not be too slippery. Sadly, the latter was my experience with Girlfriend Collective's leggings, which was such a bummer because I thought they were going to be amazing but they made my skin crawl whenever I put them on. But I know people LOVE them and certified Cool Girl Bethany Rutter wears them and looks very cool in them.
I have two pairs of leggings that are my ride-or-dies. A pair for the gym and a pair that are somewhere between a soft pant and a hard pant, that strikes a balance between cute enough to wear to work and comfy enough that you could fall asleep in them.
The first is predictable. And bad. And I fully own that there are better places to get leggings. But I've had my Lululemon's for c. 12 years. And they've held up and seen me through all kinds of body changes. When they finally crap out on me I don't know what I'll do because I'm 100% sure that whatever they were putting in those babies to make them last so long (kevlar??) they are not putting in them now. If you've bought some of these pants in the last 5 years, let us know how they're holding up in the comments?
The second is equally, if not more maddening and I'm sorry for what you're about to read.
