Ok ok, I know I’ve been going on about foodwork a lot lately. Clearly I’m at the end of my tether. I promise I’ll talk about something else soon. That said, the conversation seems to have struck a chord with a lot of you too, so I wanted to round out our discussion of foodwork with something that feels – dare I say --hopeful?

What would it look like and feel like if we reimagined foodwork? How could we make this essential, life-keeping activity better for everyone?

And I’ve already shared that I’m doing a weekly ‘Friend Dinner’ with a friend (who also recently separated from her partner) and her kids. It's one small way we're sharing the load. And I’m working on an essay that brings together some more of my thinking around this so I won't say too much just now.

But I wanted to hear from you.

What would a world look like where foodwork wasn’t a private enterprise that we all embarked on in our own homes? What if foodwork was shared among neighbours and communities? What infrastructure and investment would we need to make foodwork less laborious for individuals – particularly women and even more so marginalised women? What infrastructure do we already have? Are there any examples you can think of – from real life or even in fiction – where foodwork is less, well, work? What if people were paid for their foodwork? What if foodwork is more of a communal practice (as it has been throughout history). Faith groups, community lunches, community fridges and so on. Basically, how do we make foodwork better?
