Joe Wicks’ ‘relapse’ and his war on jaffa cakes (and fruit) , Instagram, 5th August

I have an essay coming in a few weeks about Joe Wicks so I’m not going to say too much on this, but I will direct you to some things I’ve written about having a good relationship with sugar, and specifically, helping kids to have one so they don’t grow up to tell millions of people that JAFFA CAKES are the op. Unbelievable.

In Serena Williams News

Serena Williams goes public with her (paid) partnership with Ro, Instagram, 21st August

Instagram blew up with hot takes after the news broke that Serena Williams – one of the most celebrated athletes in recent history – was taking a GLP1. The message was that this proved somehow that we are all being held to impossible beauty standards – as though we didn't already know. I don’t doubt this part, but what I struggled with is the way we let Serena off the hook for participating in and upholding these standards. It seems nobody wants to be critical of Serena because of the racist misogynoir she has experienced by media and online commentators. And yet, if we turn away from the way people with significant power and privilege continue to uphold white, Eurocentric beauty ideals at the same time as being victims of them then what chance do we stand? I don’t mean to say we should all pile on Serena, but it was kind of wild to me to see the lack of analysis between the racist origins of BMI and the anti-blackness inherent in the current trend for thinness. It’s so much deeper than ‘unrealistic beauty standards’. Maybe we need to dig into this a bit more too?
