Unbelievably here’s a Guardian article that I’m not totally mad at. Emma Beddington absolutely roasts the wellness set who have designated the winter months 'The Great Lock-In'. The idea is that you double down on your fitness routine so that you emerge in the spring buff and toned. Beddington discusses how this is really boring, actually. But it feels like an inevitable extension of the deeper obsession with thinness and body fascism that has really gone hard this year.
Only Chris van Tulleken could have the gall to suggest we put a tax on food during a ‘cost of living’ crisis, once again revealing his complete failure of imagination. We know that as goods and services become more expensive, small luxuries like a bar of chocolate or a trip to McDonald’s becomes even more important. For some families this might be an accessible way they show care and offer comfort. Besides, with food prices already soaring (as with chocolate, see below), we’ll be able to see if that results in less of those foods being consumed. Never not astonished by the anti-UPF crowd’s commitment to missing the point entirely. IT’S NOT THE BEANS.
