Happy National School Meals Week. Yes this is a thing.
This week I was invited into my 5 year old’s school to learn about their school food ethos and to taste some of the dishes. I don't think this was in any way planned to be on School Meals Week, but a happy coincidence nonetheless. We were sat down in the dining hall and greeted by the head teacher, who presented a timeline of the school’s ‘food journey’.
Now, I know I have told you bits and pieces about the lunch at our school. I’ve told you about how Avery wasn’t really eating at school. And about how I asked for some accommodations to be made. And how the food is quite challenging. And how he basically eats plain pasta every day.
But there’s a whole backstory. A backstory that I’ve been slowly piecing together for the past two and a half years. A story that has come to me in fragments from teachers and parents in the upper school. A story that has left me saying – on more than one occasion – ‘what the actual fuck???’
This is to say I was floored to hear the head fully admit The Backstory to a room full of parents earlier this week. Are you ready? Buckle up friends, it’s a bumpy ride.
