Before I start, and apropos of nothing, here's a piece I wrote about chocolate spread and what I'd recommend doing if your kid seemed kinda obsessed with it. I hope you find it useful in these trying times.
Today I asked Avery how he was finding the school lunches this school year.
'YUCK', he said. Followed by 'bad!'
He then went on to break it down day by day.
On Monday, he has bread and plain pasta.
On Tuesday, he has bread and plain pasta.
On Wednesday, he has bread, plain pasta and pizza.
On Thursday, he has bread and plain pasta.
On Friday, he has bread, plain pasta and polenta fries.
He actually told me he calls it Polenta Fry-day, which is a riff on an Archer joke that I can only assume his dad told him. Still, very funny.
I asked him if he ever had the fruit salad, to which he said, no he doesn't like it. I also enquired after the veggie and hummus plate that is supposed to be in the middle of each table. Apparently the nursery and reception kids annihilate it before the year 1s get there.
So my kid's diet, at school at least, is a variation on the theme: carbs.
And while the school WhatsApp group is having a nuclear meltdown about the protein content of the red pasta sauce – don't worry the school is going to start advertising that it has hidden lentils in it, phew!! – I'm completely fine with A eating virtually nothing but carbs.
